1 Keyword, Multiple Positions
Hey all, hope your all enjoying your week. Today Cory Digital wanted to do a quick blog post about the disadvantages of ranking multiple times for the same keyword. This is also known as keyword cannibalisation, meaning where you have 2 or more pages ranking for the same keyword.
Here are some points on why you shouldn’t be doing this and I will amend on these points further through the blog post.
- Time Efficiency
Making sure you are time efficient is key, if your SEO agency is providing you multiple pages for the same keywords, they are wasting time on pages that are not needed. If the pages are ranking for the same keywords the content is obviously very similar, the topics are being broken down too many times into too many pages. Google doesn’t like this and notices that you are trying to do so. It won’t be long until they either penalise you or even worse de-index you. Meaning that they will take you off the Google search engine.
UX (User Experience)
This is not only bad for you where your site could end up with Google, but it is also not good for the user. It can be confusing to a user if you have multiple pages that are talking about a similar subject. Would you like it if you went onto a site with multiple pages saying pretty much the same thing? Or would you think to click off the site and go to someone who talks about the keywords you have entered on one single page?
CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation)
Again this relates back to UX, meaning people are less likely to convert to your business. Okay yes, you might get more clicks for the first few months, but your conversions won’t be at there full potential. Also, this short-term strategy can result in being penalised by Google and can damage your domain massively. So all the time and money you invested into search marketing can be wasted quicker then you can pull the page down.
What we mean by quality is the quality of your content that you are writing, you are basically writing about the same topic over and over again on multiple pages, why not just header out your page and make it looks a lot neater, make your structure a lot cleaner and the quality of your content will be at its highest potential. Also, you are always trying to not duplicate what you wrote beforehand otherwise you will be penalised for duplicate content.
